Hauling 2,100 gallons of water on a chassis measuring just 21' in length, this compact little tanker can make a u-turn in a cul-de-sac! Based on this, Tanker 5 has on occasion dumped their tank, returned to the fill site and arrived back to the dump site before larger tankers even finished turning around! Chester Hose Co. specified the cab forward Peterbilt to maintain the short wheelbase of this rig - when originally inspected, the aft portion of the cab was left wide open.
At the suggestion of the fire chief, a sleeper cab type enclosure was added to finish the look. Further inspection found that the wheel wells did not have finished edges - again at the "suggestion" of the chief, angled edge pieces were cut, finished with paint and dried during final inspection!Antique Engine 2 - 1941 American LaFrance 500 Series 750 gpm/250 gal.
This rig was of particular interest to me as it is only the third American LaFrance 500 Series I have ever photographed. Maintained in the pristine condition shown, it features a unyque cab configuration with a bench seat set far back from the steering wheel as well as two angled forward facing jump seats behind the bench seat. It remained in active service until 1974.
