Originally organized in 1951 as the Mackay's Beach Vol. Fire Department to provide improved fire protection to the area (the nearest FD was in Leonardtown located 20 minutes away), present day the Second District Vol. Fire Department and Rescue Squad operates as St. Mary's Company 6 providing Fire, Rescue & EMS protection to the residents of the 2nd and 9th Election Districts.
Construction of the first firehouse began in May of 1951 following the department's organization in April of that year. Supported by various fundraisers, it was built by the members and served until 1961 when the current firehouse shown above was constructed in Valley Lee three miles from the original McKay's Beach location to provide more centralized protection for their expanding response area. Present day in 2021, Second District Volunteer FD & Rescue Squad is awaiting the completion of a new modern multi-million dollar station
