Organized May 10, 1923 the Brookhaven Fire Department present day serves the Hamlet of Brookhaven as well as portions of the Hamlet of Shirley. Over 100 volunteer members operate from two stations provide Fire and Rescue protection responding to over 750 alarms annually.
Engine 5-3-2 ("The Workhorse") - 2004 Pierce Dash 2000 gpm/1000 gal.
Responding out of Headquarters, Engine 2 is assigned first due for mutual aid RIT response. Accordingly, it is equipped with a RIT pack and Stokes basket.
Engine 5-3-5 ("East Side Crew") - 2014 Spartan Gladiator ERV 2000 gpm/750 gal.
Engine 5 is outfitted with a RIT pack as well as a portable Hurst® power unit supplying a spreader and cutter.
Engine 5-3-8 - 2010 Pierce Velocity 2000 gpm/750 gal. 50 gal. A & B foam
Assigned to Headquarters, Engine 8 is equipped with a RIT pack as well as a portable Hurst® power unit supplying a cutter and spreader.
Engine 5-3-9 ("Beast From The East") - 2000 Pierce Dash 2000 gpm/1000 gal. 60 gal. A foam
Equipped with a RIT pack and Stokes basket, this rig is first due from Station 1 for mutual aid RIT response.
Ladder 5-3-1 (Retired) - 1999 Pierce Dash 100'/2000 gpm/300 gal.
This rig was replaced in early 2022 with a Pierce Arrow XT Ascendant 100' mid-mount ladder tower featuring the aerial painted Maroon.
Rescue 5-3-3 ("Pride Of The Hamlet") - 2007 Pierce Dash
Responding out of Headquarters, it is equipped with onboard Hurst® pumps supplying a hydraulic spreader as well as multiple cutters and combi-tools. In addition, it carries a Hurst® e-Draulic battery powered spreader and cutter, air bags and surface water/ice rescue equipment.
Rescue 5-3-4 - 2018 Emergency One Typhoon 750 gpm/400 gal.
Assigned to the substation on the east end of the district, this "wet rescue" features a similar equipment complement as Rescue 3 including hydraulic and battery powered Hurst® extrication tools.
Brush 5-3-12 - 1965 Kaiser 6x6/1995 Schunk 250 gpm/1000 gal.
Water Rescue 5-3-11 - 1996 Grumman/Chivvis
This rig is outfitted for surface water/ice rescue operations.
Antique Hose Wagon 5-3-6 - 1956 Studebaker Transtar/H&H Tank Truck Co.
Originally assigned as a hose wagon, it carried 4,000' of 3" supply line. In 1975, it was reassigned as the department's heavy rescue and equipped with Hurst hydraulic extrication tools. In 1988, it was converted back to a hose wagon and used as a funeral caisson. It presently remains in service in the pristine condition shown and is active on the parade/muster circuit. This rig has a virtual twin in service with the Amagansett FD (also in Suffolk County) which runs a 1959 Studebaker/H&H Tank Truck Co. rig that ran as their heavy rescue until well into the early 1990's before it was retired, sold to a farmer for providing mobile power and ultimately returned to the department where it has since been restored.
