Hianloland
Read MoreOrganized in 1940, Hianloland Volunteer Fire Co. serves two thirds of the Town of West Greenwich bordering the Towns of Coventry and Exeter (Rhode Island) as well as Oneco (Connecticut). Serving a rural residential community, 20-25 active volunteers provide Fire, Rescue and ALS level EMS protection answering an average of 250 alarms annually.
Station 1
One of two stations operated by Hianloland, the three bay building to the left was built in the 1960's as the original firehouse. When the department outgrew the existing firehouse, a three bay extension was built using a Morton type building with the labor performed by the members with the chief serving as the general contractor. Erected at a cost of only $187,000, Station 1 is one of the most energy efficient fire stations in the state of Rhode Island utilizing such technology as radiant heat flooring. A unyque feature
of the station is that is houses the only non-profit CrossFit® gym in Rhode Island.
Station 2 was constructed by the members after a long term "gentleman's agreement" with a local farmer housing the apparatus on his property fell through upon his passing. The new owners of the farm thought they had inherited a fire department along with their purchase
- when an extension of the original agreement could not be reached, the apparatus and equipment was removed from the premises and a six bay building using block construction was erected by the department members.Engine 20 - 2003 HME/Ferrara 1250 gpm/1000 gal./CAFS
Acquired in 2019, this rig originally served the Hope Fire Co. of North Cambria, Pennsylvania - its' striking Yellow and Black paint scheme made it a well suited match to Hianloland's fleet color. The first Compressed Air Foam System equipped engine in the region, Engine 20 is equipped with two 1-3/4" pre-connects, a 50' 1-3/4" "jump line" and 2-1/2" pre-connected tanker line. Responding first due from Station 2, it operates as a squad with a large complement of equipment transferred from the recently retired Utility 17. It is outfitted with seven SCBA (five mounted in SCBA seats) with spare cylinders, a thermal imager, multi-gas meter, accountability system receiver,
a portable generator, chainsaw and a 30' three section ladder. BLS medical gear including an AED rounds out its' equipment complement along with an animal lift harness (donated by a prominent resident after his own
horses fell into a pool and were rescued by the Hianloland VFD using improvised techniques and equipment.Engine 16 - 2007 Kenworth/Southern Fire 1250 gpm/1000 gal.
Assigned first due out of Station 1, Engine 16 is outfitted with 1,200' of 2-1/2" hose, 24' each of 2-1/2" and 5" suction hose and two deck guns. In addition, it carries four SCBA with two spare cylinders each, gas/electric current meters, wildland hand tools, a chainsaw, and a 30' three section ladder. Equipped with both Intercity and State of Rhode Island 800 Mhz radios, it responds as
part of a tanker task force. Both Engine 16 and Tanker 18 were driven home from the manufacturer in Georgia by company members with the rigs arriving within just 1-1/2 hours of the new station's dedication ceremony!Tanker 18 - 2007 Kenworth/Southern Fire 1250 gpm/1000 gal.
Responding from Station 1, Tanker 18 also operates as part of a tanker task force. Featuring a Class A/B foam system, it is equipped with 24' each of 2-1/2" and 5" suction hose, a 2,000 gallon folding tank, three forestry bags (900' of forestry hose, wye connector and nozzles) as well as portable and suction pumps. Purchased by the Town of West Greenwich, Tanker 18 was painted Red as part of a planned township wide fire department
(which never materialized).Squad 19 - 1999 Ford F550 4x4/4 Guys 500 gpm/250 gal.
Originally serving the Po-Mar-Lin Fire Co. in Pennsylvania (hence the Red color scheme), this well equipped mini-pumper was acquired in 2017. Featuring a rear mounted pump with 20 gallon foam system, it is outfitted with three rear pre-connects (two 1-3/4" and one 2-1/2"), two 9' long 4" suction hard sleeves and forestry hand tools.

Utility 17 (Retired) - 1997 Ford F-350 4x4/Reading
Originally delivered as just a cab and chassis, Hianloland VFC acquired a Reading® utility body painted White which was then re-painted Yellow by a local vendor. The majority of the conversion of this rig was done in-house with members wiring the emergency warning lights including a marine spotlight and applying reflective striping/letters (their first time using vinyl lettering). Having served as a multi-purpose unit for EMS first response and tech rescue calls (high angle, search and rescue, confined space),
it was retired in 2019 with the arrival of the new Engine 20 which now operates as a squad carrying much of the equipment from this former unit. Retired with only 12,000 miles on the odometer, it is being replaced with a newer Chevy Tahoe SUV from Long Island, New York offering increased seating.HianlolandWest GreenwichFordReadingUtilitySupportDept BuiltRetired
